Toner, essence, serum, ampoule: what is the difference?

Korean skincare has several watery steps that look alike in the bottle. Here is what each one does and how to layer them.

Toner

The first hydrating layer after cleansing. Korean toners are usually gentle and watery, patted in with hands or a cotton pad. Toner pads are toner pre-soaked into soft rounds.

Essence

A slightly richer hydrating step that sits between toner and serum. Some milky toners blur the line between the two.

Serum

A concentrated treatment step for a specific goal, such as hydration, brightening or smoother-looking texture.

Ampoule

An extra-concentrated serum, often used for a short period or for a specific concern.

The order

  1. Toner
  2. Essence
  3. Serum or ampoule
  4. Moisturizer
  5. Sunscreen (morning)

Questions people ask

Do I need both a toner and an essence?

No. Many people use one or the other. Start with a toner and add more only if your skin wants extra hydration.

Is a serum the same as an ampoule?

An ampoule is generally a more concentrated serum. Both go after toner and before moisturizer.

Can I use two serums?

Yes. Apply the thinnest first and let each absorb before the next.
